So you've planned everything out now all that's left to decide is how to get down to Disney. In this mini-series we will see who the champion is flying or driving.
The past two blog posts have featured the pros and cons of both flying and driving down to start your DCP, and now it is finally time to reveal what mode of transportation is champion!
Disclaimer: Deciding to drive or fly down to start your DCP is a personal choice, but this post is about how I decided which form of transportation I will be taking to get down to start my DCP.
When I first got my acceptance to the DCP several months ago I had planned to fly down to the program. It made the most sense to me and my family to fly down for several reasons. One, I wasn't planning on having a car on my program, so it didn't make sense to drive down because someone would have to drive the car back. Two, my family has never driven to Orlando; we've only ever flown, and a three hour flight seems much more manageable than a 19 hour car ride. And three, I have ten days between when I move home from London and the start of my DCP, so flying down would give me more time at home to see my family and organize my life.
From the onset flying logically made the most sense. I know what you're thinking: Caitlin, does that mean flying is the champion of this battle of transportation? I started to say yes, but then hold up! The more I began thinking to myself, the more I began questioning my decision. You're probably thinking, what? how? You just laid out very good reasons for why flying makes the most sense!
It comes down to moving back from abroad. Leaving London means getting rid of everything I purchased to live here that I couldn't initially pack. That means bedding, kitchen supplies, bathroom supplies, office supplies, room decorations, basically everything besides clothes and mementos from home I have to get rid of to move back home. The more I began thinking about the start of my DCP the more I began questioning whether I really wanted to go through that all over again. Did I really want to have to spend money on all this stuff I would need during the DCP only to get rid of it once my program had ended? I already had to do that twice living abroad and I wasn't sure I was ready to shell out that kind of money a third time, especially after so recently discarding my London life. So I decided I will be driving down to start my DCP!
The victor of the battle of transportation methods is DRIVING!
It really came down to the fact that I didn't want to throw away a bunch of money on things that I would only be using for the short term. That was what tipped the scale in favor of driving over flying; however, there are other benefits of driving down that I am very much looking forward to!
I have been begging someone, ANYONE! to go on a road trip with me for the past six years and it has sadly never happened. So I jumped on the chance to turn my drive down to start my DCP into a road trip! And that is exactly what I plan on doing. While it will take me a bit longer to get down to Orlando I am so excited to make a bunch of pit stops on the way in some great and historic American cities! (Stay tuned for my upcoming post on how my road trip to the DCP goes) Additionally, road tripping down is a great way to spend some quality time with my family before departing from them for several months. Nothing says family quite like being stuck in a car with them.
Overall, it was a really close battle. Initially flying looked like it would take the cake, but at the last minute driving pulled through and claimed the title of champion. How are you planning on getting down to start your DCP? And what factors helped you decide?
